3、eir minds. A lexical phraserefers to a programmed sequence which has high frequency of occurrence, and asa whole for storage and use. It combines the advantages of grammar, semanticsand context, which is considered to be

4、 the ideal language teaching unit. So someresearchers begin to applying lexical phrases to English teaching, claiming thatlexical phrases are particularly important for English teaching.Because lexical phrases play an im

5、portant role in language acquisition, it isnecessary to study learners’ use of lexical phrases in their language learning. Atpresent, the studies on lexical phrases at home focus on theoretical exploration,and the subjec

6、ts of the studies are limited to college students. There are fewstudies on senior high school students’ use of lexical phrases in their Englishwriting. Therefore, based on Nattinger and DeCarrico’s (1992) theory of lexic

7、alphrases, this paper took 80 compositions of senior high school students in gradeone as subjects of the study, and respectively analyzed the use of lexical phrasesin 40 high-score compositions and the other 40 of low-sc

8、ore compositions. Itaims to explore the characteristics of the use of lexical phrases and the reasons forits existence in the senior high school students’ English writing.The results show that there are more lexical phra

9、ses used in high-scorecompositions than those in low-score ones. In both groups, phrasal constraints areused most frequently among the four categories of lexical phrases, followed bypolywords. Sentence builder takes the

10、third place, and the least used category isinstitutionalized expressions. The use of polywords, institutionalized expressions,phrasal constraints, and sentence builders in high score compositions are morefrequent than th
